Why should I have a home charging box installed? What is the benefit?
Charging boxes are specially designed to charge electric vehicles and provide both faster and safer charging than, for example, a wall socket. For example, the charging box can provide up to 10 times faster charging than charging in the wall socket.
In addition, by installing a charging box at your parking space, it keeps track of the temperature during charging to minimize the fire risk that can otherwise occur when charging from a wall socket. Should something go wrong, the charging box cuts off the power to eliminate the potential danger.
How is a charging box installed?
A charging box is mounted on a wall, railing or pole and must be installed by an authorized electrician.
Where is the best place to install a home charging box?
The ideal location is on a wall in your parking area such as a garage where the charger is sheltered and easy to reach. If no wall is available it can be mounted on a pole or stand. Installing it close to your distribution board helps simplify the work needed.
Can I install a charger in a townhouse complex or apartment block?
Yes but it may require approval from your Body Corporate or Homeowners Association. Complexes often need to consider electrical capacity load balancing solutions and individual metering for shared or designated parking bays. Many complexes are now adopting smart charging systems that manage electricity use more effectively.
Can I charge my electric vehicle at any charging station?
Not all public charging stations are compatible with every electric vehicle. Some locations offer only AC charging while others offer both AC and DC charging.
How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle at a public station?
Charging time depends on several factors such as the type of charger the size of the battery and the current charge level of the vehicle. AC charging is slower and is typically used for top ups while parked for longer periods. DC fast charging provides much quicker charging for example during a travel stop.
